On the shores of the Chattahoochee, find giant leopard moths, saw palmettos, gator traps, & imported limestone at the Standing Boy WMA.

Partnering with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to provide new trails through this 1,580-acre wildlife management area, Standing Boy adds mountain biking & improved hiking where dove, turkey, small game & white-tail abound.

Just outside Columbus, Georgia with its famous riverwalk & white water rapids, the WMA sustained heavy storm damage from a March 2019 EF-3 Tornado. The 750’ wide and 8.88 mile long storm pattern delivered an etimated $500k in property damage, “toppling a large cell tower along with a swath of pine trees with wind speeds estimated to be around 140 mph. Around a dozen metal guidewires attached to the tower, and measuring over one inch in diameter, were snapped.” (Athens Banner-Herald.)

Set out from the trailhead on an IMBA Gateway Trail: a short loop with a variety of progressive features.

A ±.6 mile Gateway Trail includes a baker’s dozen of enhanced technical trail features introducing beginner level riders to the rock overs, gardens, log skinnies, armored creek crossings, berms & other trail elements that they can expect to find throughout the 24 mile trail system.

Setting the stage with techy rock gardens, slabbed berms & alternate lines to help riders build skills.

Imported limestone from a local quarry (& community project partner) helps enhance the natural context, dialing technical trail features up a notch (or two).
